Description:

Texas CASA (Court Appointed Special Advocates) is the membership organization that provides financial assistance, training and technical support to the 71 local CASA volunteer advocacy programs serving foster children in 217 counties throughout Texas. Texas CASA is a leader in working to assure sound public policies on issues affecting the child welfare system, the well-being of children in state care and other policy areas related to our mission.

Texas CASA seeks a dynamic, motivated and knowledgeable Public Policy Intern to support the Public Affairs Department with various tasks and research to support Texas CASA’s training for local programs, trauma-informed partner collaboration, event planning and other issues related to state policies affecting the foster care system. Duties will include research and issue-area analysis, youth engagement planning, legislative priority development and other duties as assigned.

The intern may also be asked to perform other tasks such as updating materials based on the outcomes of the 85th Legislative Session and issues studied during the interim, drafting text for the Texas CASA policy news blog and/or creating educational resources such as webinars, handouts, website content, etc.

Ideal candidates should be enrolled in a graduate program in social work, public affairs, or similar degree program. Upper-class undergraduate candidates with relevant experience will also be considered.

Candidates should have an appreciation for collaborative work and planning, a willingness to learn and to advance their knowledge of Texas’ public policy system and the ability to work well in a fast-paced, professional environment. Familiarity with the child welfare system and issues impacting children/youth in foster care is a plus.

This is a part-time, 15-hour/week spring and summer internship for a graduate-level student, to begin January 22, 2018 and end August 31, 2018. Texas CASA will accept applications for individuals available through May 31, 2018, but preference will be given to those who can commit through the end of August. There is an $8,000 stipend associated with this internship. Applicants only available through May will be eligible for a $5,000 stipend. All applicants must be able to pass a background check.
